This past year since I made the enormous and scary leap from no longer doing wedding photography to pursuing commercial and product styling and photography, I have had the absolute privilege (and blessing!) of getting to work with an amazingly talented designer and friend, Emily Ley. She was one of the very first designers to give me a chance when I set out in this direction with nothing in my portfolio to prove that I could do it. Ha! By God’s grace I have now had the privilege of styling and shooting a number of projects for Emily and they continue to be some of my favorite and most shared work. Emily recently celebrated the enormously successful launch of one of her signature items, the Simplified Planner along with the Simplified Wedding Planner, and Simplified Recipes binder! There is just nothing as exciting as seeing images go from the back of my camera, to a client’s website and then see that immediately result in sales and business growth. I love every bit of this work and am just grateful that God has allowed me to go in this direction and actually feel like I am doing something that I love and am uniquely gifted at. Yay! Here are a few of my favorite images from one of our last shoots!
I remember the exact day that you told me that you had met her. You were standing in my kitchen. Her name was J.K. (seriously?) and you met her on MySpace. (SERIOUSLY!?) Yes. MySpace. Proof that some good has come from MySpace. haha. I remember how “cool” you said that she was. She had tattoos and gauged ears just like you and was into the same things you were into. You said that she was SO beautiful and you talked about how fun it was to be with her. Soon after that you moved back to Virginia…”not to be near her” of course. ;)
Fast forward a few years and God has been working SO diligently in your relationship. To refine it. To refine you both through it. To show that HIS “better way” runs deeper and is more meaningful and more purposeful and sometime is more painful but more significant then you ever imagined. I have seen Him sanctify you both. To call you both into a more meaningful and intentional walk with Him. To show you the reward and mutual gratification in laying down your life to serve another sinful imperfect human being. No, marriage is not easy…but is is beautiful and worth it.
I could not be ANY more excited to see you two get married this summer because I know from almost 8 years of marriage that although the road is not going to be easy, your Heavenly Father will be faithful to show Himself capable and committed to growing your marriage into something beautiful, lasting, impactful and glorifying to Him.

One of my absolute favorite parts of my job is the opportunity to do mentor sessions! During one-on-one mentor sessions I get the chance to sit face to face and provide training specifically tailored to that photographer’s business and skill needs and I gain a new friend in the process! One of my most recent mentor sessions was with Tiffany! Tiffany is in the very early stages of building a photography business and is going about it the right way…baby step by baby step. So may photographers rush to put up a website and order business cards when they really still need to be developing their skill and business plan before marketing themselves as a “professional.” Tiffany came with a solid foundation in the technical aspect of photography and with an excitement to learn that just makes my heart so happy!
Tiffany wanted to learn how to shoot with more confidence in Manual mode and get more consistent results without spending lots of time fixing images after the fact. She came away with a better eye for the creatively correct exposure of an image, how to get that correct exposure more consistently and how to make her images “pop” right out of the camera! By the end of our session she was getting images that were gorgeous right out of camera like the one above and had developed her eye for choosing the right lighting and location. In her own words…
“My first mentoring session was an amazing eye opening experience. You are very personable with a hands on approach teaching style. I can’t believe that after one session, my skills have already improved. Hooray! You challenged me and for that I thank you. The strong foundation skills that you provided me with today will be invaluable for the future. I can’t wait till my next one-on-one mentoring session! -Tiffany”
YAY! This just makes me so happy! Tiffany, I cannot wait to see your business grow in the coming year and I am just blessed to be able to be a part of it!
Ashlee and I are SO very excited to share with you some big news about the upcoming Branding and Business Essentials workshop in Richmond, Virginia! This year we are honored to add two very talented guest speakers to the workshop! Commercial photographer Casey Templeton and highly published Richmond based Wedding and Portrait photographer Cyn Kain!!
Casey Templeton is a phenomenal and highly successful commercial and editorial photographer known for images that carry a “real life” feel.
He studied at the School of Media Arts & Design at James Madison University and was named the 2005 National College Photographer of the Year. After graduating, he completed a successful photography internship with National Geographic Magazine.
Since then, he has delivered dynamic images to big-name clients such as Wal-Mart, Apple, Altria, Philip Morris, Dominion Power and editorial clients such as New York Times, USA Today and various other publications.
On a personal level, Casey was my (Shay) first and primary mentor in professional photography and I owe much of what I know to him. He is as generous with his knowledge of photography as he is talented and I cannot wait for you to meet and learn from him!
“From a very early age I have loved all things pretty and whimsical. I was that little girl who was planning my wedding at the age of five. I adore weddings. I absolutely believe in true love and children remind me that miracles happen every single day. Every day I strive to live with my heart full of love and do my best to share that love.
Documenting people’s love stories is such an honor. These love stories are what inspire me – whether it is the love between a newly married couple or the love between a mother, father and child. The love shared between people is unique and intimate, just as I strive to make every moment I capture. I want my images to tell your story so vividly that they take you back to that day and all the joy you felt!”
To brag on her behalf for a bit…Cyn is as talented as she is sweet and beautiful! Shas been published in Southern Weddings, Wedding Unveiled,Southern Bride & Groom,The Knot NC,The Knot DC/MD/VA and featured on Style Me Pretty, The Everygirl, Merci New York, DIY Bride, Grey Likes Baby, On to Baby, andEvery Last Detail!
Cyn is also generous enough to be giving away a free mentor session with her to one of our Essentials workshop attendees at the workshop in July!!! Treat yourself by checking out her beautiful work on her website: www.cynkainphotography.com
