I’m no designer (Lawd help me – I could find a way to mess up clip art) but I work with a lot of talented designers and let me just tell you, it is so incredibly hard to create something original. Everything has been done. It is such a long long process of digging deep and shutting out everything that you have seen to create something authentically and “you.” An old (ok, same age as me) wise (but really though) photographer (Casey Templeton) once said (I’m sure he borrowed it from someone else…):
“If you are trying to do what someone else is already doing then you will only ever be second best.”
#BOOM. That hit me like a ton of bricks when I applied it to my own business.
Enter Julie Goette of Ten Four Paper. I’m sure it didn’t come immediately. I’m sure that she had to dig deep and be challenged along her journey as a designer but this girl has created a true gem of a paper line that is just unlike what is out there. It is snarky and cool. It is colorful and real. It is just perfect. And perfectly unique. And hilarious. Did I mention hilarious? It makes me want to actually give cards for the 100 occasions that she has created cards for (“Congrats on your new house!”, “I’m sorry you broke up!”).
When Julie got in touch with me the second time to shoot her newest line of products, I didn’t want to assume that we were just going to work off of the same vision that she had for the first shoot so I asked her to create a Pinterest board to give me a visual of what she saw in her head for this shoot. What she sent me was the most fun, colorful, inspiring Pinterest board and the moment I saw it the ideas just took off and grew into what has become one of my favorite sets of work to date (I know, I always say that! I mean it though!!).
Julie asked me to create four styled banner images for her. One for each of her new products and one showing a sampling of all of her products for a catalogue cover photo. These are just a few of my favorites from the shoot. Make sure that you stop and read her cards and snarky paper goods and better yet, check out her shop and send or give one to someone who could use a pick me up. You might want to ask her for a signed copy though because this girl is going places…just you wait.
Seriously, how fun are these props!?! Everything from paint swatches to macaroons to colorful rubber dinosaurs. haha TOO.MUCH.FUN.
And just in case you are overly impressed with my “studio” let me just give you a peek at where the magic really happens…it ain’t glamorous friends;) The proof is on Instagram:
