Are you joining us at the Cultivate Retreat!?

In just a few short weeks I will have the pleasure of joining an amazing group of talented small business owners and creatives to speak at the Cultivate Retreat in GA!  Last week while we were visiting Graham’s parents in the gorgeous mountains of NC I was able to spend a few hours breathing in the fresh mountain air and finalizing my speaking content for the retreat. I’m more then just a little nervous.  Not because I don’t know what to say, but because I know without a shadow of a doubt that what has been put on my heart to share has the potential to be game changing and it is really the hope of my heart that it will be just that in the lives of even a few of the women who will gather for this awesome retreat.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to sneak away for this experience. In their own words, “Cultivate Retreat is an intimate learning environment for wedding professionals. Set amidst the secluded beaches and towering oaks of Jekyll Island, Georgia, As you learn, you’ll meet dozens of other creatives who share your passion for creating businesses that matter. You’ll indulge in inspirational dining experiences while cultivating new friendships, and there will be plenty of time for relaxing and unwinding as you see fit.” (Yes please!) Is anyone else as in need of this as I am!?

My assistant Kelly actually had the privilege of attending Cultivate two years ago. In her words, “Cultivate is a retreat for wedding professionals unlike any other. With a limited amount of attendees, the approach is more intimate than most retreats or conferences. This allows for amazing networking with peers in the industry as well as opportunities to discuss your business questions and receive answers from the speakers.

Cultivate offers a wide range of content. All of which is applicable to anyone in the wedding industry and all with the intention of generating growth in your business. The balance of group presentations, Q&A time, and breakout sessions really help attendees hone in on specific needs and interests of their business. Branding, workflow flow, helpful tools, reaching your target audience, and so much more were all covered at last year’s retreat and with a new panel of speakers, even more is in store for this year!

In addition to amazing and applicable content, Cultivate is designed for refreshing. The venue is chosen with relaxation in mind and each meal is beautifully orchestrated for a complete, inspirational experience. If you are looking for something different out of your conference experience this year, if you want to connect with speakers and attendees on a real level and also walk away with concrete ways to improve your business, consider attending the Cultivate Retreat this August!”

I hope to see you there!

Video Post: Defining YOUR success!!

Somewhere amidst the hundreds of conversations/counseling sessions that Ashlee  and I have had in the past 4 years about being stay-at-home moms and running businesses, the importance of defining what success looks like for us in our specific and unique businesses became such a crucial and freeing foundation to build our businesses around. I know what it feels like to constantly be trying to keep up with someone else’s definition of success in the photography industry and I am only just now beginning to experience the freedom of determining what exactly the measures are that I am using to define my success.  My business is not the most important thing in my life and for that reason, success for me has more to do with what happens outside of my office then what happen in my office.

I hope that this video is encouraging and at the same time challenges you to more clearly define the specific measures of “success” that you are pursuing!  I am so confident that there is SO much freedom and joy to be had when we use our own unique and specific definition of success as the foundation for all other business decisions!

Happy Tuesday friends! If this was helpful at all please leave a comment and let me know. I would love to do more things like this in the future!

4 Days. 4 Seats. 40% Off!!

I CANNOT believe that the Essentials workshop for photographers is next week! Ahhh!  Ashlee and I are both so incredibly excited.  We were going back through the content together the other night and were just reminded how powerful and helpful this content is.  Where was this workshop when I was getting started 8 years ago!?  In the next 4 days we are getting rid of the last few Saturday workshop seats at a ridiculous discount.  If you are on the fence we hope that this will help you take that leap and make the investment in yourself and your business!  E-mail me directly to get this last chance discount while the seats last:

I remember the first time I went to a photography workshop and one of the speakers there asked me why I had work up on my website that represented a type of work and style that I didn’t even want to do. Behind the answer to that question was a lot of fear and insecurity. What if people don’t hire me? What if that (style/product) is what people want and I don’t offer it? What if they see that I don’t really know what I am doing? How will I keep up with what my competition is offering? Turns out a lot of the business decisions that I made in those early years were based on two things 1) fear of loss of clients 2) trying to keep up with what others were doing around me. I paid a few thousand dollars and flew across the country to go to that workshop. The truth is I left discouraged with a lot of questions but no answers. The Essentials Workshop was created to be the workshop that I wish that I could have invested in going to 8 yrs ago. It lays the foundation starting at the heart level that It has taken me 8 yrs and lots of wasted time and money trying to figure out on my own. I could not be more excited for the women who are coming. Friday is sold out and there are a few seats left for Saturday. Make one of them yours. Let us know if we can help get you

We have teamed up with two incredibly talented Richmond based photographers Casey Templeton and Cyn Kain to make this workshop unique and genuinely amazing!! (you can read more about our special guest speakers here!) This workshop offers something a bit different than your average photographer workshop in that it better equips photographers for the business of photography – an area of mentorship we know is lacking!

If you are a photographer in the VA, MD, DC area Ashlee and I are reaching out to you to ask you to consider being a part of the Essentials Workshop Affiliate program!  As such, you would help us spread the word locally about the upcoming workshop and in exchange, you would have the opportunity to receive a deeply discounted seat and to offer exclusive deeply discounted workshop seats to your followers and fans who may be interested in attending. You could even earn a free seat!

Since we are Florida based, we would love to be able to hook attendees up with local photographers that they can go to as a source of continued local training and mentorship that we cannot provide!

Exciting Announcement!

Ashlee and I are SO very excited to share with you some big news about the upcoming Branding and Business Essentials workshop in Richmond, Virginia!  This year we are honored to add two very talented guest speakers to the workshop!  Commercial photographer Casey Templeton and highly published Richmond based Wedding and Portrait photographer Cyn Kain!!

Casey Templeton is a phenomenal and highly successful commercial and editorial photographer known for images that carry a “real life” feel.

He studied at the School of Media Arts & Design at James Madison University and was named the 2005 National College Photographer of the Year. After graduating, he completed a successful photography internship with National Geographic Magazine.

Since then, he has delivered dynamic images to big-name clients such as Wal-Mart, Apple, Altria, Philip Morris, Dominion Power and editorial clients such as New York Times, USA Today and various other publications.

On a personal level, Casey was my (Shay) first and primary mentor in professional photography and I owe much of what I know to him.  He is as generous with his knowledge of photography as he is talented and I cannot wait for you to meet and learn from him!

His work can be viewed at

In her own words…

“From a very early age I have loved all things pretty and whimsical. I was that little girl who was planning my wedding at the age of five. I adore weddings. I absolutely believe in true love and children remind me that miracles happen every single day. Every day I strive to live with my heart full of love and do my best to share that love.

Documenting people’s love stories is such an honor. These love stories are what inspire me – whether it is the love between a newly married couple or the love between a mother, father and child. The love shared between people is unique and intimate, just as I strive to make every moment I capture. I want my images to tell your story so vividly that they take you back to that day and all the joy you felt!”

To brag on her behalf for a bit…Cyn is as talented as she is sweet and beautiful! Shas been published in Southern Weddings, Wedding Unveiled,Southern Bride & Groom,The Knot NC,The Knot DC/MD/VA and featured on Style Me Pretty, The Everygirl, Merci New York, DIY Bride, Grey Likes Baby, On to Baby, and Every Last Detail!
